Bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, and Thailand, Myanmar has displayed a steady yet gradual increase in population throughout recent years. Although the Southeast Asian country, formally known as Burma, is the largest mainland Southeast Asian state, its population is lower than its neighboring countries. Nevertheless, Myanmar has been ranked the 26th most populated country in the world, with its previous capital city Yangon being the country’s most populous city. Myanmar's population density has also been increasing alongside its total population. The majority of the population live in areas with populations of less than three hundred thousand inhabitants. In this regard, it does not seem too surprising that Myanmar has a mostly rural population. However, the rural population has in fact been decreasing throughout recent years, while the urban population has increased.
